IIX: MIDI, MuStudio.fr card reader |
Description |
Rare, beautiful Fairlight Series IIX, with MIDI and a MuStudio.fr card reader disk drive replacement. This actual machine was sold at VEMIA in 2014, and serviced by Fairlight experts nLi before we delivered it to our client. The client loved it, and rated the quality of sound and sampling very highly (and he should know). But quite soon afterwards a switch on the monitor was accidentally changed, and the monitor blew up. So it then sat for several years unused in his studio. Eventually he sourced a replacement tube, and we have had that fitted by an old-school TV tech, and the monitor serviced. After that amount of time unused, the Fairlight will need some skilled work to get it 100% again. Switching it on, at first we had very little response, but we re-seated some cards and it started coming back to life - although the technique to use the MuStudio card reader and how it combines with the Fairlight's OS was also a serious challenge for a newbie. As it stands, we were able to access the factory sound library (and all versions of OS, too) - we didn't explore further, but it might be that there are some user samples as well. The output sounds lovely.
We weren't able to sample (but nLi told us afterwards that we should have used a D.I. box because of impedance issues). We didn't get into the MIDI side, and we couldn't get the light-pen to work. We didn't try the remaining 8-inch disk drive. A few keys were unresponsive at first but improved with use. One black key seems to get a bit stuck. So you'll need a certain amount of work put into it, but then have a wonderful example of a classic instrument. Very nice cosmetic condition - the MIDI add-on box is worn in places but everything else is very good - and a bright new monitor screen. The original tube is included. Packing (actually palletising unless we can deliver by hand): 50GBP. Hand collection would be great. |
