Description |
VARIOPHON SPOT by REALTON (Germany, 1980's) - in my experience the Variophons are the finest analogue wind synthesisers ever made. I am only selling this second one this time on VEMIA because I have collected too many of them! . . . . . . . . This is the smallest SPOT model - it allows you to insert up to four of the robust analogue voice cards that come with it. Each card provides the sound of one instrument. 12 cards in all were made, and this comes with 9 of them: Sax, Trumpet, Clarinet, Bassoon, Oboe, Pan Flute, Horn, Tuba, and Trombone. Not here are the Kleine Klarinett (small clarinet, an octave higher - rare), Soprano Sax (rare as hen's teeth) and Harmonica (I know of only one in the world). . . . . . . . . The BREATH CONTROLLER has a piano-style keyboard (rather than wind instrument layout like the Akai/Yamaha wind synths), so this is a great way for keyboard players to play a 'wind' instrument! Breath control affects pitch, filtering AND volume, the amount is adjustable. Three tunings - concert, Bb and Eb can be selected, and any combination of the four cards can be used together. High, Mid, Low tone controls are provided. A fortissimo switch allows you to play full volume with no need to blow . . . . . . . . . The BREATH CONTROLLER is black but was half-sprayed silver. It features a GLISSANDO button allowing portamento slides up or down, and has a good long cable (about 15ft) so as not to limit your freedom of movement. Voltage is 240V via the unusual custom-made transformer. The Ext-NF socket and knob are a mystery to me - as is the case on all my Variophons . . . . . . . . . . .. VARIOPHON WEBSITE with masses of info and photos is here: www.variophon.de . . . This is a VERY enjoyable instrument to play with its remarkably authentic wind sounds. Mark Hollis and Talk Talk used them often. . . . . . . . . A DEMO MP3 is here: www.morgan-fisher.com/variophon.mp3 . . . . . . . . . LOW START PRICE has been set to offset the shipping cost from Japan, approximately US$100 to US, UK£70 to UK/Europe, by insured airmail). |
