 Make Mulogix
Model Music Logic Systems Inc Slave 32
Description This ultra-rare machine (#17 out of probably less than 30 ever made) has been serviced by world expert Dani Wilson at Hideaway, and is in very good working order. Here's a good run-down:

'Released in 1986 by Mercer 'Stoney' Stockell & Jerry Kaplan as what was to be final member of the GDS / DK Synergy family packaged as a 3U rackmount with a few new and improved features over the previous models. The 1978 GDS, 1982 DK Synergy and 1986 Slave 32 all feature an identical Digital High Speed 32-Oscillator board originally designed by Hal Alles which itself was a direct derivative of the 1976 Alles Machine at Bell Labs. Sadly highly competitive new offerings coming out of Japan were to spell the final curtain call for these remarkable instruments and only a small handful of the Slave 32 were eventually built & sold. The SLAVE 32 is a sophisticated digital synthesis module with multitimbral capabilities and a flexible MIDI Interface. It uses both additive and phase modulation synthesis to provide crisp, clear sounds with unusually good dynamic range and freedom from distortion. Additive synthesis has been widely recognized as the most precise and ultimately flexible means of synthesizing sounds. with up to 16 oscillators per note and 16 pairs of complex amplitude and frequency envelopes, the SLAVE 32 can produce realistic imitations of 'acoustical“ sounds and a great variety of more “synthetic“ sounds as well. Moreover, the characteristic “sound” of the SLAVE 32 is quite different from other synthesizers, making it easy to produce timbres that stand out from the crowd. The MuLogix SLAVE 32 is an evolutionary descendent of the Digital Keyboards 'Synergy' synthesizer. The Synergy was the first commercially successful all—digital synthesizer, and included a 7h note touch—sensitive keyboard and a built—in sequencer. The SLAVE 32 packs all of the synthesizing power of the Synergy into a 3U rack mount chassis, and adds many new features: * Full MIDI Interface, controlling up to four separate timbres with complete independence (including Pitch Bend, Mod Wheels, etc.). E Final version — not implemented yet: MIDI Controllers may be routed independently to various SLAVE 3E parameters. For example, MIDI Mod Wheel could be routed to Portamento Rate, while MIDI Aftertouch controls Vibrato Depth. * 4 times the internal voice storage of the Synergy, with AB sounds permanently kept in ROM and QB user—programmable voice programs. (External computer L software required for programming individual voice parameters.) * The ability to use programmable 'E—squared“ voice cartridges as well as standard Synergy ROM voice cartridges, adding a further 24 voice programs. * Built in utility functions let you arrange the internal RAM voices into any order desired, and move both single voices and complete banks of 24 voices freely between internal RAM and a programmable cartridge. * A programmable Tuning Table that lets you individually specify the pitch of all 188 MIDI key numbers with a high degree of accuracy. * Over 90 programmable “Step Programs“, which store many performance and voice parameters along with a particular arrangement of voice programs. Steps may be changed via MIDI Program Change commands. Like voice programs, Step programs may be saved and loaded to “E—squared' cartridges. * Any 4 of the 120 sounds may be used simultaneously, separately or in various combinations. Each sound may be controlled independently over separate MIDI channels, or a wide variety of key assignment modes can be used with a single MIDI channel. * Voice programs have been expanded to include new parameters, including 4 times as many basic waveforms, aperiodic vibrato for very natural effects, and response to release (Key UP) velocity as well as the normal attack (Key DOWN) velocity. * The RS-832 interface gives a host computer complete editing control over all voice programs stored in CMOS RAM (48) or in optional 'E—squared“ cartridge (E4). Steps, voice program libraries and tuning tables may also be stored and edited via computer. The Synergy SYNHCS software program for CP/M computers is being modified to support the new SLAVE 32 features. A voice librarian program (MuLib) for the IBM PC is now available, and complete PC voice editing software should be developed soon.' Dani points out that she hasn't found a version of MuLib that works with it. Still an incredible and very collectable machine, especially if you have a Synergy and some cartridges. But on the extremely positive side, here's what she said about this machine:

'Back in 2018 I resurrected and rebuilt this unit - it was completely dissassembled, cleaned and returned to life. Following essential repairs, all tantalum caps were replaced with EL caps, all front panel switches replaced with new OMRON Digitasts, a new SMPSU retrofitted (unit configured for 240V operation), all ROMs imaged a new NVRAM battery and a load of new UNC screws.@ When she had it back for a check-up last month, here's a recording she made with this unit during soak testing (made using various layered patches from the factory sound set): https://soundcloud.com/hideaway-studio/1984-mulogix-slave-32-the-perfect-storm
